04:32 – More than 100 aid workers killed in South Sudan since 2013

More than 100 aid workers have been killed since the civil war in South Sudan broke out in 2013, said the UN Security Council and the UN's Peace and Security Department. African Union, Thursday. In a joint statement, the two organizations say that 107 aid workers lost their lives in the conflict, which began two years before South Sudan declared independence. The country represents a "particularly challenging" environment. They call on all parties to "stop immediately" to target those providing emergency badistance. Representatives of the United Nations and the African Union gathered in New York for an annual summit to discuss current conflicts and finances. The war broke out after President Salva Kiir accused rebel leader Riek Machar, who was then a member of parliament, of waging a coup.
