Zimbabwe opposition leader Nelson Chamisa claimed Tuesday a "dazzling" victory in the general election the day before, the first since the fall of President Robert Mugabe.

Based on a count of votes out of 10.000 polling stations, Mr. Chamisa tweeted: "Brilliant victory (…) We did remarkably well" against the current head of state Emmerson Mnangagwa, and "we are ready to form the next government".

A total of 23 candidates were running for the presidency, but the race is being played between the current head of state Emmerson Mnangagwa, boss of Zanu-PF, the party in power since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, and Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Officials of the committee organizing the vote stressed the very high turnout, estimating that it was around 75% one hour before the vote. Closing offices vote.

European observers have confirmed a high degree of participation while warning of possible "deficiencies" in the electoral process.
