Prince Louis, the third child of Prince William and his wife Kate, was baptized on Monday at a private ceremony at St. James' Palace in London, in the absence of Queen Elizabeth II, said the palace. Kensington.
The queen, aged 92, and her husband Prince Philip, 97, had attended the baptisms of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the brother and sister of Prince Louis, fifth in the line of succession at British throne.
According to the Press Association, their absence from the ceremony on Monday would not be linked to health problems: they were on the way back to London after staying at Sandrigham, a property of the Queen in the Norfolk (East of England).
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, led the office, attended by members of the royal family and close friends of the parents.
Among others were the Prince Charles, the baby's grandfather, and his wife Camilla; Prince Harry, Louis' uncle, and his wife Meghan, as well as the family of Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William and mother of Prince Louis.
The Archbishop of Canterbury baptized Prince Louis, laying on his forehead the blessed water of the Jordan. "A great privilege" as much as a "nerve-racking" event, he said
The names of the six godparents, friends or relatives of the parents, were announced before the ceremony, which began around 15:00 GMT and lasted about forty minutes.
The Chapel of the Saint James Palace, built in the sixteenth century, had already hosted the baptism of Prince George, Louis's eldest, in 2013. The sister of Louis, Princess Charlotte, was baptized in 2015 at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham, East England
Louis was born April 23 at St Mary's Hospital in London. His birth had been expected for days by fans of the royal family, who had camped in front of the establishment.
He is the fifth in the line of succession to the British throne, after his grandfather, Prince Charles , his father, Prince William, and his brother and sister, George and Charlotte.
He is also the seventh great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II.
