Two foreign tourist trains collided on Tuesday near Machu Picchu, the famous Inca fortress in southern Peru, killing at least 10 people, including five seriously injured, local authorities said.
The collision took place around 10:00 am (15:00 GMT) on the railway between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, the closest village to Machu Picchu, the most visited tourist site in Peru, said the authorities.
"So far, We count ten wounded, including five seriously, "said the Peruvian Civil Defense Directorate on his Twitter account, stating that the victims had been rushed to clinics.
Firefighters and rescue workers were dispatched on the scene of the accident, a remote region of Peru at the crossroads of the Andes and plains, in the Vilcanota Valley, said the local police.
According to Peruvian media, demonstrations Local authorities allegedly attempted to block the railway line by placing stones and pieces of wood, which would have forced a first train to stop. A second train would then have rammed the first train stationary.
This version of the facts has however not been confirmed by the police who will try to establish the causes of this collision.
One of the trains involved in this collision belongs to the company PeruRail and the other to the company IncaRail, which both provide connections to Machu Picchu popular with foreign tourists.
IncaRail said that of his pbadengers, a Chilean tourist, had been injured in this accident. "The other pbadengers (IncaRail train) have not been affected and can continue their journey to Machu Picchu," said in a statement the group Inca Rail.
