Your number of Twitter followers may drop due to purging

The purge continues on Twitter. The blocked accounts will no longer be taken into account by the followers counter.

If your number of followers on Twitter drops suddenly this week, it's normal. In a post posted today, the microblogging platform warns its users.

"Over the years, we locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behavior. In these situations, we communicate with the owners of the accounts and, unless we validate the account and reset their pbadword, we lock them without connection, "says Vijaya Gadde, a Twitter manager. And starting this week, Twitter will no longer consider these locked users on the followers counters. As a result, the number of followers posted on some profiles is likely to decline.

Twitter continues its purge

The good news is that according to the platform, on average, people should not observe a drop of more than 4 followers. However, highly tracked Twitter accounts may be more impacted. "We understand that this can be difficult for some, but we believe that accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more reliable service for public conversations," says Vijaya Gadde.

The measure announced today falls into the part of the big purge of Twitter, presented a few days ago, which aims to no longer take account of suspicious accounts on the number of followers and interractions.

With the update today, Twitter will also ignore accounts created by real people but whose creators may have lost control. The platform can lock an account if it detects changes in its behavior, such as "Tweeting a large number of unsolicited answers or mentions, Tweeting misleading links" or if a large number of users are blocking it. . It is also possible that the account is blocked if, after a data leak (on another service), Twitter thinks that the security of this account is compromised.

These accounts can however be unlocked via a "confirmation" process

No impact on the number of Twitter users

Once again, Twitter claims that this purge does not affect its number of active users per month. These locked accounts are not considered when counting the number of active users per month or day.
