X, the research and development arm of Alphabet (parent company of Google), has announced that two of its flagship projects will become independent companies. These are the Loon (released 2013) and Wing (2014) projects. Loon is the high-speed Internet broadcasting system through a network of stratospheric balloons to serve underserved or unserved areas. Kenya recently adopted this solution to make the rural Internet. Wing is a program of delivery drones.
The two subsidiaries will keep their name and continue their development in the same way. Wing will be led by James Ryan Burgess while Loon will be piloted by Alastair Westgarth. There is at present no mention of concrete commercial development for these two projects.
In all, Division X has already given birth to six subsidiaries, including Waymo (autonomous cars), Verily (life sciences), Dandelion (geothermal) and Chronicle (cybersecurity). Alphabet now has 15 subsidiaries. (Eureka Press)
