CAPITAL PENALTY – Prison authorities in Sri Lanka have reported that they are seeking a hangman after the reinstatement of the death penalty for drug traffickers announced by President Maithripala Sirisena.

This will be a post of executing executions of prisoners by hanging, paid 35,000 rupees (about 200 euros) per month, detailed Thushara Upuldeniya, the spokesman of the penitentiary system quoted by AFP. This week, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena announced the execution of drug traffickers who are currently serving life sentences. No executions had been carried out in the country since 1976.
Death sentences already existed for murders, rapes and drug-related crimes, but they had so far been commuted to life imprisonment. 373 people have been sentenced to death in the country, including 18 for serious drug-related crimes, said Thushara Upuldeniya. A service responsible for executions still exists but his three executioners have resigned. "We must be ready to carry out executions after the government's decision this week," the spokesman said.
