Amazon has unveiled a new feature on its app to make it easier to find and buy small supplies such as screws or nails.
Amazon's new app update should delight the do-it-yourselfers of Sunday. Indeed, thanks to augmented reality, the online trading giant can now identify screws and nails, but also washers and bolts, as well as nuts and offer you an online reference to get you since … its website, of course.
This new feature, named Part Finder, is based on augmented reality and the smartphone camera, but it also requires certain steps. To be able to find one or the other screw on the site of Amazon, it will be necessary to deposit an example of the model sought on a neutral surface. Be careful that it is important to align the screw or the nail with the iPhone. It will then be necessary to place a coin next to the object to be sought, in order to have an index of the scale of this one.
The application will then ask for all kinds of information such as the shape of the screw head. Finally, Part Finder will be able to measure and cross the data of the object with those added by the user, just to find the reference more quickly and without error. The application can find your screw among more than 100 models.
It is an interesting technological advance to be able to measure such small things and to be able to cross them with an online catalog. Amazon has achieved this feat by acquiring the startup Partpic, in 2016, which has developed Part Finder.
A small revolution that should facilitate the badembly of furniture and avoid some disputes. No need to do fourteen stores, just a nail scan and you know what you need and, most importantly, where to buy it.
For now, the feature is only available for iOS smartphones. It should be deployed later on Android.
