If the Huawei P20 Pro impresses with its three camera modules, it could soon be dethroned in the race to the number of photo sensors. Light, a company specializing in digital photography, announces a mbadive investment from the Japanese holding company SoftBank and Germany's Leica. According to the press release published on the Light website, this investment is intended to accelerate the development of real-time environmental modeling tools, which could be integrated into autonomous cars. The company also confirms the arrival of the first smartphone integrating its shooting technology based on the use of multiple camera modules.
A real technical challenge
For two years, Light has been marketing the L16, a camera equipped with 16 sensors. According to information published by Washington Post in June, the smartphone provided by Light could be equipped with nine photo sensors. Currently, the L16 provides shots of 52 megapixels, with an optical zoom x5 (against an optical zoom x2 for the iPhone X). To optimize the quality of the image, it merges up to ten shots taken simultaneously by its different camera modules. These are differentiated by their characteristics, starting with their focal length.
By combining nine camera modules in the same smartphone, Light will have to combine a robust technical configuration. The computing power needed for real-time processing of nine photos is very important. The company will also have to optimize energy management, in order to avoid that the activation of several camera modules will harm the autonomy of the smartphone. The mobile should be sold at a high price. Currently, the L16 is marketed at 2,050 euros.
