Roger Federer (ATP 2 / N.1), the title holder and eight-time crowned on London turf, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon by South African Kevin Anderson (ATP 8 / N.8 ). After a marathon of 4 hours and 13 minutes, Anderson won in five sets, 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11.

Federer 36 years old, winner of his twentieth major title in January in Melbourne, had not lost before the last square in his English garden since 2013 and his defeat in the second round against the Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky .

Anderson 32 years old, finalist of the US Open last year, disputed his first quarterfinal in London. To win, the South African, did speak the powder on his stake (28 aces) and multiplied the winning strokes (65 total).

Federer lost his first set at Wimbledon since 2016 by giving the third run to his opponent. The last time the man with 20 major titles dropped a set on the turf of the All England Club, it was two years ago, in the semi-final lost, in five rounds, in front of the Canadian Milos Raonic .

Another striking fact, the Basler did not play his match on the Short Center. It had not happened his quarterfinal in 2015.

Federer won the first set without a hitch (2-6). In the second, he conceded a first break since his semifinal 2017 won against Tomas Berdych but managed to pocket the round in the tie break (5/7).

The turn of the game was played in the third set. Federer missed a match point at 5-4, on the service of his opponent. The latter continued on his throwing to win the third set 7-5. He then returned equal 2 innings everywhere (6-4).

In the deciding set, Federer missed a break point at 3-4. Since no player could take the service of his opponent, the decisive set remained balanced until 11-11. Anderson then managed to break before winning the match on his first match point.

In the semi-final, Anderson will face the winner of the match between Canadian Milos Raonic (ATP 32 / N.13) and American John Isner (ATP 10 / N.9), scheduled in stride on the court N.1.
