Netflix has announced a new feature that will arrive on iOS later this year, after launching on Android. Called "Smart Downloads", this feature will automatically download some video content for offline viewing.
This smart downloads will remove the last offline episode already seen by the user and automatically download the next offline episode. In this way, the user will already find the episode ready to be viewed locally. All this, without having to perform any operation, or to cancel old episodes, or to download new ones.
According to Netflix, this feature will help save space on smartphones and tablets, while allowing users to see offline content. Smart downloads are enabled only when the device is connected to Wi-Fi.
For example, the user downloads an episode of Stranger Things at home to watch him on the subway while he goes to work. Once in the office and connected the device in Wi-Fi, Netflix will delete the episodes already seen and download the following in the background.
The feature can be turned off at any time. In addition, it only works for Netflix episodic content, and not for single movies or videos.
This feature will arrive on iOS later this year.
