Norwegian cross-country skier Vibeke Skofterud, Olympic champion in Vancouver and two-time world relay champion, died in a jet ski crash in southern Norway, Norwegian police and ski federation announced on Monday.
The body of the 38-year-old woman, missing by her partner a few hours earlier, was found on Sunday morning on an island near the city of Arendal.
"Everything indicates that this is a jet ski accident," said Sveinung Alsaker, a local police chief, in a statement.
A 4 x 5km gold medalist at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and World Champion in the same race in 2005 and 2011, Skofterud announced his sporting retirement in January 2014.
The announcement of his death was followed by a tribute rain
"I'm shaking, I'm in shock, I'm petrified," said Marit Bjørgen, the most successful medalist in the history of the Winter Olympics.
"J ' have lost one of my best friends, "said champion Therese Johaug, via the Norwegian Ski Federation. "A friend who lit up the room she was entering, poured her energy, love and attention all around her."
