Yesterday in Blankenberge a tragedy was narrowly avoided. Four children, aged between 10 and 11, were rescued from drowning. The rescuers had warned the four children several times. The currents were powerful and getting away in the sea is risky. But they did not listen. One of them was swept away by a wave and dangerously close to a breakwater. Jan Peeters, coast guard, spotted it in time: " The young man was very calm, but would never have had the strength to come back to shore by himself." The parents were not on the beach
The rescue was delicate: one of the children carried a plaster. He lost his foot several tens of meters from the shore. A total of 7 rescuers were mobilized to bring the children back to safety. They only have a few scratches but are shocked. On the beach, no trace of parents. "We found the parents near the dyke, 300 meters away from what had happened, the other couple was further away shopping ," says Tom Cocle, chief of rescuers at Blankenberge.
Rescuers can not see everything. They ask parents to always keep an eye on their children. "I can not stay on my towel and let them swim alone, no, because I can swim too, and then they can get away very quickly", tells a lady on the beach. Following this incident, the parents received a warning from the rescuers and the police.
