The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) will try, as soon as next year, to hack the services of various financial institutions in Belgium to verify if they are sufficiently protected against the possible attacks of real cybercriminals, said Tuesday Tim Hermans, director at the BNB
The BNB will become, after his Dutch counterpart, the second central bank in Europe to call hackers called " ethical ". The European Central Bank (ECB) approved a framework for this type of testing last May.
" We see that the risk of cyberattacks is growing steadily. Two years ago, for example, the bank Central Bangladesh was attacked and millions of dollars stolen ", emphasizes Tim Hermans.
" We will first target market infrastructure "says the director. " These are, for example, systems like Swift and Euroclear, through which a large part of the bank flows pbades, if something happened, it would be catastrophic. "
Banks will be able to participate on a voluntary basis to BNB tests. " But I think everyone is convinced of their usefulness ", still considers Tim Hermans. " Most financial institutions have in fact set up their own program ."
Each test should cost around 150,000 euros, but the NBB emphasizes that these costs will be borne by financial institutions. [19659007] Newsletter info
