Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoech broke the world record of the 3000m steeple at Monaco Diamond League meeting, July 20, 2018 / AFP
Kenya's Beatrice Chepkoech smashed the world record of the 3000m steeplechase on Friday night in 8:44:32, almost eight seconds behind the previous global mark, at the Diamond League Meeting of Monaco.
The former record belonged to Bahraini of Kenyan origin Ruth Jebet in 8 min 52 sec 78 since August 27, 2016 in Paris.
Aged 26 and former specialist road, Chepkoech for his part gained 15 seconds on his personal best (8: 59.36 June 30 in Paris).
This world record comes the same day that the Integrity in Athletics Unit (IAU) has published an exhaustive list of 109 athletes and leaders suspended for doping and corruption, including Jebet, suspended provisionally after the discovery of EPO in his urine.
At the foot of the 3000m steeplechase at the Rio Games in 2016, Chepkoech was also the following year at the London Worlds because of an incredible mistake of course.
At the front of the peloton after some 500 meters of the final on August 11, 2017, Chepkoech continued on the outside of the track in the last corner, "forgetting" the river placed inside.
Realizing her blunder, the Kenyan had then returned to jump the river, losing about ten seconds on its rivals.
At the price of a big effort, she had rejoined the pack but had paid his debauchery of energy in the final.
