Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix, 12th of the 21 rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship on Sunday at the Hungaroring (4,381 km). The Brit of Mercedes has won in front of the Ferrari of the German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and the Finnish Kimi Räikkönen. Stoffel Vandoorne was forced to retire on lap 51, when he was 9th. Hamilton now has a 24-point lead over Vettel in the championship.

Starting from pole, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) got the best start. The Briton, leader of the world championship, dug out the gap on his teammate Valtteri Bottas and on Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), who had pbaded Kimi Räikkönen in the first lap.

Vettel was the last to change tires among the leading men. He was pointing at Hamilton 6.6 as the Brit returned to the stand (25th lap). Pbaded first, the German tried to get ahead enough before his pit stop. He was 10 seconds ahead, but a change of tires a bit too slow pushed him back into third place, behind the two Mercedes (40th lap).

The two McLaren-Renault Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne also delayed their pit stop. This strategy allowed Vandoorne to go up from 15th to 7th place at the time of his pit stop. However, the Belgian driver was forced to retire on lap 51 when he was in 9th position because of a problem with the gearbox.

Hamilton took off, while Vettel remained stuck behind Bottas and even saw his team-mate Räikkönen come back on him at full speed

On lap 65, Vettel was attacking Bottas. Both cars touched, but Vettel managed to pbad, while Bottas was also ahead of Räikkönen.

Bottas then fought a duel with Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), who was touched by the Finnish Mercedes. Ricciardo ended up still pbading and finished 4th, while he had started in 12th position. Bottas was 5th, Alonso 8th

Hamilton (213 points) increased his championship lead over Vettel to 24.

F1 will now be a break for several weeks. The next Grand Prix will be the Belgian one on August 26 at Spa-Francorchamps.
