Twenty-four communes have been selected to participate in a pilot project for the take-back of cans, says Tuesday the Walloon Minister for the Environment, Carlo Di Antonio, in a statement. The project, which will be launched in September, targets abandoned cans in the wild. Each coin will earn a 5 cent bonus to be used in local businesses.
For two years, citizens and organizations from the 24 participating municipalities will be able to bring abandoned cans back into the public space. Two systems will be tested in an alternative and progressive way: an automated recovery using a specific machine and a manual recovery via the municipal staff. After one year, both scenarios will be evaluated and "possible adjustments for the rest of the project" can be decided. Each can will be entitled to a premium of 5 cents, granted in the form of a voucher to be promoted in local businesses partners.
The price of the can in Wallonia will not be changed, the statement said. "This bonus awarded under the pilot project will be financed by the packaging sector." In addition, the project only targets cans found on public roads. Those consumed at home should always be thrown in the PMC trash bag or brought to a recyparc.
24 communes were selected in each of the Walloon provinces to participate in the project. The communes are divided into groups of 2. Here they are:
