Abortion is banned in Indonesia. Except if the pregnancy endangers the life of the woman or under certain circumstances in case of rape. The repeated rape of a teenager by her own brother is not one of these exceptions, according to a judgment rendered in closed session Thursday, July 19, 2018 by the district court of Muara Bulian, on the island of Sumatra, and mentioned this Saturday by our colleagues from Agence France Presse.

The 15-year-old woman, raped by her older brother, was sentenced to six months in prison for having aborted. "The girl was charged under the Child Protection Law for abortion," a court spokeswoman said. His brother was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for badual badault on a minor. The prosecutor had required one year in prison for the teenager and seven years for her brother.

Both were arrested after the discovery of a fetus in a palm plantation. The teenager, who was aborted at six months of pregnancy, was raped eight times by her brother between September and June, at the time of the abortion, according to the spokesman.

When conditions, however limited, are met for voluntary termination of pregnancy, the Indonesian law provides that it must be performed by an authorized professional and for a pregnancy of six weeks maximum. Psychological follow-up sessions are also planned.

In this Southeast Asian country, 30% to 50% of maternal deaths are due to abortions, according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO).
