State Security and the General Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS) now have powerful software at their disposal to sift through the depths of the internet, according to information from Het Nieuwsblad and De Standaard published Monday. The tool consists of different modules of software and hardware. "This will allow us to search for information more efficiently," says Ingrid Van Daele, spokesman for state security, quoted by newspapers. "This program essentially performs the same tasks as our men – filtering the traffic on social networks and finding information – but in an automated way and on a large scale."
The software can also examine the "deep web" and the "dark web", the part of the Web that is not indexed by search engines
The federal police will be able to use the tool as well. The program was endorsed in August 2016, a few months after the Brussels attacks.
