Shoko Asahara, the ex-guru of the Aum sect, sentenced to death for the sarin gas attack, was executed on Friday morning along with six other accomplices, also involved in the attack.

Shoko Asahara (whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto) had his death sentence confirmed years ago and had been waiting on death row since 12 accomplices involved in the sarin bombing that had killed 13 people and caused various ills, sometimes irreversible, to 6,300 others.

Shoko Asahara is the first of 13 convicts whose execution has been announced. That of the execution of six accomplices involved in the attack, quickly followed by the Japanese media. The likelihood of execution of the former members of the Aum sect was increased in recent times with the displacement of several of them.
