British actress Jodie Whittaker will be the first woman to play "Doctor Who" – the hero of the BBC's cult science fiction series – baduring his fans that the genre did not matter.
The 36-year-old actress, known for her role in the British series "Broadchurch", succeeds Scottish actor Peter Capaldi and twelve men.
"I knew, of course, that the fact being the first woman "to play this character" would give additional responsibility, "said the actress Thursday before 6,500 fans gathered at the 49th edition of Comic-Con San Diego (California), at the first press conference of the film crew
The reason "this role is so incredible for an actor is that the genre is unimportant and totally liberating," said Jodie Whittaker.
"As a woman – who is not a gender, who is just a woman – I never apprehended a role by saying 'Oh, how would a woman do that?' I just did it from my perspective, "she added.
" It's incredibly inclusive and – knowing there are fans all over the world – it's like feeling this huge family 'Who' you want to be part of because she's so encouraging, inclusive and funny, "she also said about her role.
The successful adventures of Doctor Who, a humanoid who travels to through space and time, and who is able to survive by regenerating themselves in a new appearance, were first broadcast in 1963.
BBC America took advantage of Comic-Con, which attracts some 130,000 fans of film, series and pop culture, to broadcast the first trailer of the new season, which opens on the surprised face of Jodie Whittaker.
"All this is new to me", she says, while his character has apparently just regenerated. "New faces, new worlds, new era, if I really ask, really sweet, would you be my new best friends?"
Doctor Who's new companions – Yasmin, Ryan and Graham – are played by Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh
The new season has 10 episodes and – if the release date has not been released – fans expect a broadcast in October.
Jodie Whittaker also finds in this series the creator of Broadchurch, Chris Chibnall, following Steven Moffat as a showrunner.
