Joy-Con refill grip (SteelPlay) – TEST

[ad_1]

We are getting used to SteelPlay products at Switch-Actu. We are tackling our 5th accessory test proposed by this brand for the Nintendo Switch. Today, let's talk about their charging stand for Joy-Con, more commonly known as charging grip . This is an accessory to welcome Joy-Con while reloading. If Nintendo offers its own version, SteelPlay has decided to take action with its own charging grip.

A grip better thought for a good grip

If you are one of those people who have not Not the chance – or the desire – to own a Pro Controller, so you may be using your grip, the one supplied with the console when you buy it. Denied of any reloading system, it is still practical to simulate a clbadic controller. After many hours of play using this grip during my first months with the console, I found this one well thought out but not very comfortable . Very uncomfortable. Playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with such a small controller was, for me, not necessarily a good idea. Moreover, it was impossible to continue playing in TV mode when my Joy-Con were unloaded.

It is true that few gaming sessions are as long as the life of a recharge from Joy-Con . But just a free weekend to play Zelda or Splatoon 2 (or other, obviously) is our hobby the most greedy, and paf. No more battery. I thought well to get the charging grip, the support that should certainly be delivered with the console, but its comfort did not change in any way that of the base.

Nevertheless, the proposed support by SteelPlay has at least the merit of correcting this. If it is not the most beautiful accessory that we could test, its ergonomics was thought to improve the grip of Joy-Con on a grip. Once the small switches of the Switch inserted into the grip, with a little bit of trouble otherwise, everything is very tight, you see them inclined outward. The grip offers therefore, thanks to the layout of the keys via this inclination, something a little closer to a Joystick Pro . There does not stop the good ergonomics. The " grips " of this grip are more imposing than on the original grip. Your hands will be better positioned on it, with more anti-slip coating on the back. The whole is not necessarily very pretty, but well thought out .

Small flat nevertheless. I do not know if I am the only person in the world to put my grip, Joy-Con integrated, vertically. Indeed, the original allows strangely to put the whole not back to the furniture, but in the other direction, the bottom of the Joy-Con to the ground, for short. Aesthetically speaking, it's pretty enough. Unfortunately, the grip SteelPlay does not allow that.

Charging only wired

I believed for a handful of seconds that this grip would also integrate a battery, to recharge the Joy-Con without the need for a cable. This is unfortunately not the case. We can not blame SteelPlay for this when we see the price of the accessory on Amazon ( 18.99 € ), nor even when compared to that proposed by Nintendo . But that would have been a good addition.

In all cases, the product is delivered with a cable USB Type-C of 1.8 meters. It allows to connect the grip that will reload the Joy-Con if they are inserted in it. Of course, you do not need to plug everything into your Nintendo Switch dock: a computer, an external battery, or even a wall outlet will do much of the job. To inform you of the level of charge, two small LEDs are present on the center of the grip. Each one dedicated to a Joy-Con they light up in red when the charge is in progress and in blue when it is finished. Finally, the grip also offers the player number indicator, the 4 small LEDs of Joy-Con to know if you are the player 1, 2 or other up to 8. No real LEDs here, everything goes through a system of mirrors as on the original grip

Efficient and cheap

Abstract

No, this is not the maaf that I prefer. But the Joy-Con recharge support offered by Steelplay is efficient and inexpensive. For 18.99 € on Amazon, you will be entitled to a charging grip well thought in terms of ergonomics. Its design is not necessarily its strong point, but it allows a grip on horseback between the original grip and the Nintendo Switch's Manette Pro. We would have simply wanted a battery integrated in the grip to do without cable, but it is not for this time.
