Since no Nobel Prize for Literature will be awarded this year, the Swedish Academy having been swept away by the wave of denunciations #MoiAussi, a "New Prize for Literature" is born to reward the work of a writer. Quebec's Kim Thúy is one of 47 nominees.

Wishing to recall that literature must be badociated with the values of "democracy, openness, empathy and respect", a hundred Swedish intellectuals decided to form a "New academy" and still offer an international literary prize.

"At a time when human values are increasingly challenged, literature becomes the counterforce of oppression and a code of silence. It is now more important than ever that the greatest literary prize in the world be awarded, "reads the award-winning Web site.

Three Canadian authors – including one from Quebec – managed to get on the list of the 47 nominated by Swedish bookstores: Kim Thúy, Margaret Atwood and Anne Carson

Other names well known internationally are also found, such as Elena Ferrante, JK Rowling, Patti Smith, Paul Auster , Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir or Édouard Louis.

Vote Online

Readers around the world will be able to vote for their favorite novelists, poets and playwrights until 14 August. They will choose three of the four finalists, and the fourth will be chosen by the booksellers themselves.

To ensure parity, the finalists must be two women and two men. The winner will then be appointed by a jury of five Swedish specialists on October 14.

This new prize will be awarded exceptionally and only this year since "the new academy" will be dissolved just after the award ceremony, scheduled for 10 December
