She had not expressed herself since the disappearance of her mother. Lou Villafranca is the daughter of Maurane, who died suddenly on May 7th at the age of 57. The singer was then recording an album of covers by Jacques Brel, with new versions of "Do not leave me", "Vesoul", "When we only have love" or "The song of old lovers ". A record that will be released in October. Thanks to her 24-year-old daughter, who explains herself for the first time.

Why do you release a posthumous album from your mother, which was not considered advanced enough to be marketed?

Lou Villafranca . Because it's a way to honor him one last time. She began to sing again, to return to the stage, to have a taste for music. She died brutally without having time to finish this album which she was very proud. She wished this album was finished. There are pearls in what she has recorded. His pianist, Philippe De Cock, and I decided to take over the artistic direction.

Where was the album?

These are quality models (Editor's note: first working recordings) . My mother did not have much to do to make her voice perfect. It was rather his musicians who had to start again. There are fourteen exploitable songs. We will see if we keep everything. There are some very nice things in piano voice. We must add arrangements. We have a lot of work. The idea is to make it as authentic as possible. She wanted to pay homage to Brel and do something similar to her.

Did she have you listen to recordings before she disappeared?

Yes. I had listened to some songs. And actually, the last time I saw it was in the studio precisely. She was working on those songs. That's also why I wanted to take over this project. Our last exchanges took place in the studio. I gave him advice. I made remarks to him: "That's not great, it would have to be different. And curiously, she listened to me despite her huge career, when I was a 24-year-old girl. And here it is … She left a few days later.

This is the first time that you intervene on one of his records?

At this point, yes. She has always been very modest about me. She did not want to interfere with her artistic life. She did not really know if I was going to be proud that she was asking me or if, on the contrary, it would bother me. I took another direction, I studied political science, I have a master's degree and I'm starting a doctorate, while doing a little bit of art next to it, especially drawing. I did not want to put myself in music despite my parents (note: his father Pablo Villafranca is also a singer) . No doubt by a spirit of contradiction. But today, there is something that catches up with me

Is it difficult to rehearse his last recordings after his disappearance?

It depends on the days. Still today. It's like waves. It's part of the mourning. Sometimes I'm in a work mode, diving into the preparation of this record. At other times, it's a lot harder. It's very hard. Especially for the ultimate songs she recorded when I was there, when I saw her last time. There are songs that I do not really listen to

Did you accompany him when you were younger?

Yes. Small. From my first years until I was 10-12 years old. Some of my best memories come from this period. I was a little mascot of his team on tour. I got on well with everyone. It was like a second family. I rolled on the crates of equipment. I was bullshit behind the curtain. Sometimes I went on stage for her birthday, I was going to sing with her her song "For each other" (note: released in 1998) with a bouquet of flowers. Then I did not have anything to do. I became a very independent and very boring teenager. I was listening to my stuff. I did not care what she did. Then it returned around the age of 17-18. We each had our lives. But it made me happy to see her on stage where she excelled. I think that was where she was the happiest. It did me good to see it like that.

Why did not she sing for a while?

Before embarking on this project around Brel, she had big voice problems. So, she did not want anymore. His voice was his engine. We did not know what she had. Then she was operated on with vocal cord edema. She also had back problems. She was not physically able to stand on stage. There, it was getting better.

His death is linked to his health problems?

This is an accidental cause. I do not want to say more. She made a fall. Media or even artists have said that it could be suicide, it is not the case at all. I was very sad that we are considering this. She came back on stage, she was listening … It was absurd to say that
