True to its reputation and despite uncertainties about the future, the 27th edition of the festival Vieilles Charrues ignited again Carhaix, refueling like last year with more than 280,000 spectators, announced Sunday the organizers

Over four days, an edition "colossal", not only by the quality of the artists but also by the expansion and improvement of the site, with "50% additional playground for festival-goers", explained to AFP Jérôme Tréhorel, director of the event

Among the great successes, the "sizes" Depeche Mode or Gorillaz. Depeche Mode, "it was a historic moment for the festival to have this mythical and global group" and it resulted in "a great communion with the public," said Tréhorel. A bit the same Saturday night with the British group Gorillaz, carried away by the "Tsunami Old Plows". "They told us that it was one of the greatest concerts of their life," he said.

Among the emerging artists or the young shoots, Jerome Tréhoral first quotes the two winners of the " Label Plows ", selected during the year among a group of young bands: Leska (electro) and Saro (Beatbox Loopstation)" gave magnificent concerts in front of a large audience, "he says.

half of the artists programmed at the Vieilles Charrues are still "in development", likes to remind Jean-Jacques Toux, programmer. Among them, the Belgian singer Angèle, the French group Therapie Taxi, oscillating between rock and electro, or the Parisian rapper Lomepal.

Not always easy, when the programming is done in the fall, to bet on a young band or musician for the following summer: "Someone like Eddy of Pretto, for example, last September, we do not did not talk about it a lot, "notes Jérôme Tréhorel about this young artist with often harsh lyrics, scheduled for Sunday night.

– "a stadium of France in Carhaix" –

But the joy of a successful edition does not prevent vigilance for the future. "Our festival must find a solution to reduce the financial risk," Jean-Luc Martin, president of the festival, told a press conference. "There is (the equivalent of) a stadium in France in Carhaix, we can host events outside of July," he said, recalling that every evening, the plain of Kerampuilh welcomed around 70,000 people.

Managed by a non-profit organization and relying on a network of 7,000 volunteers, the festival must sell 205,000 tickets to achieve balance. The sale provides 80% of its budget, the remaining 20% from partners or patrons.

"The economic model of Plows becomes an exception in a sector in the midst of a transformation between the concentration of the environment and increasing competition", states Jerome Trehorel. But, he says, "this reduction in risk will not be to the detriment of the artistic budget, it will be a question of lowering the cost of production by perpetuating certain installations (closing, entrances, various networks, etc.)", the whole "while preserving our specificity and our independence".

This reduction of the costs could pbad notably by a control of the land, currently rented, "either by taking over land or by having emphyteutic leases", estimated Jean- Luc Martin. Another path to explore: a possible marriage with "big boxes" to "co-produce and lower costs."

The visit of the Minister of Culture, Françoise Nyssen, who badured them of his support and called the Vieilles Charrues "exemplary", however, balm the heart of the organizers.

In the immediate future, place to the party for the last evening that was to succeed Sunday on the big stage Véronique Sanson, Robert Plant, legendary singer of Led Zeppelin, Orelsan and the British Fatboy Slim for his only concert in France

The 2019 edition of the festival will take place from July 18 to 21.
