Ranking of the great French fortunes in 2018: Luxury at the top

The great families of luxury, cosmetics and wine have never been so powerful in France. Of the ten largest French fortunes, six of them are now linked to these sectors, according to the 23rd edition of the ranking of great fortunes that Challenges publishes this Thursday on newsstands.

A trend that This is not unlike that of the CAC 40. Since the entry into the index of Hermes in June, the luxury and cosmetics sector now weighs a quarter of the index Paris.

Now for these florets French and their shareholders, the stock market year was again excellent. The professional fortune of Bernard Arnault, boss of LVMH, thus increases from 46.9 to 73.2 billion euros between 2017 and 2018. This is a spectacular increase of nearly 56% over one year! Bernard Arnault benefits from the complete absorption of Dior by LVMH and the dynamic sales of the group's main brands (Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Sephora, Veuve Cliquot, etc.)

Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, Chanel's heirs, leapfrog from 6th to 2nd place in the top 10. Their professional fortunes have been strongly re-evaluated after the publication, for the first time in their history, of the group's financial results. With nearly 8 billion euros in sales, the company ranks second in the luxury brands behind Louis Vuitton but ahead of Gucci. Alain and Gérard Wertheimer are now posting a fortune of 40 billion euros, double that estimated so far (21 billion euros in 2017).

Axel Dumas and the Hermès family remain in the third place in the charts with a fortune of 39.6 billion euros. For Françoise Bettencourt-Meyers and her family, which owns L'Oréal, it is however the "tumble". The first woman in the list goes back from 2nd to 4th place. Admittedly, his fortune increased by 10% in 2018 to reach 39.3 billion euros. But it progresses much less quickly than those of Arnault, Wertheimer and other Dumas.

A fortune multiplied by three since the crisis

The first four fortunes are thus part of the flourishing luxury sector. We must add François Pinault (6th with 30.5 billion euros), owner of Kering (Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, …) and Pierre Castel (8th to 12.5 billion euros), which holds the eponymous group, one of the leading producers of French wines. The fortunes of telecoms Patrick Drahi (owner of Altice, who owns this website) and Xavier Niel come out of the top 10 in favor of Emmanuel Besnier (Lactalis) and François Perrodo (oil company Perenco).

More generally, the cumulative amount of the 500 French fortunes has risen by 13% to 650 billion euros. A new record with a cumulative fortune multiplied by three since the crisis. Moreover, it is the first time that the number of French billionaires crosses the symbolic bar of the 100 people. Challenges accounts for 101 billionaires in 2018, compared with 92 in 2017. They were three times less numerous 10 years ago.

Last sign of this widespread progression among the ultra-rich: the minimum fortune needed to integrate the 500 French ranking the wealthiest now stands at 140 million euros. In 2009, it was "enough" to hold a professional wealth of 40 million euros. Still, even within large fortunes, the wealth gap has never been greater. If in 2009, the first in the charts had 375 times the fortune of the last, he can now count on a heritage 520 times greater!
