Spotify's online music service had 83 million paying subscribers at the end of June compared with 75 million three months earlier, a leap that did not mean benefits for the Swedish platform.

Spotify, which Thursday posted its second-quarter results, attributed the rise to its breakthrough in emerging markets, particularly in Latin America and Southeast Asia, and the success of its family-friendly offering, which nonetheless yields less than individual subscriptions.

More than 40% in one year

Over one year, Spotify recorded a 40% increase in the number of its paying subscribers and, including those taking advantage of the free offer including advertising, had a total of 180 million monthly active users.

But despite the rapid development of streaming in the world, Spotify has never made a profit since its creation in 2005. The group, which has of 90 million euros over the quarter, said it prefers to focus on its geographic expansion

Its closest competitor is Apple Music, launched three years ago. CEO of technology giant Tim Cook said in May that his online music service has surpbaded 50 million paid subscribers.
