The Council of Ministers approved the draft bill that creates the "mobility budget," said Friday the Minister of Social Affairs, Maggie De Block. This device will allow workers who enjoy a company car to exchange it for a more environmentally friendly vehicle.

In March, the House approved the "cash for car" which allows to exchange a company car for its cash value. The social partners proposed another system on which the government agreed at the same time.

The mobility budget is based on three pillars. In the first, the worker can choose a company car that is more environmentally friendly or smaller.

In the second, combined with the first, it has a range of possibilities for sustainable mobility: public transport, bicycles (possibly electric), electric scooters, etc., but also an intervention in rents or loan interest for financing housing closer to the workplace

The balance remaining at the end of a calendar year can be converted into money in the third pillar and paid into the worker's account. This amount will be subject to social security contributions but exempt from tax.
