That's what the iOS 12 private beta for HomePod offers.
The HomePod will allow users to make calls using the microphone and speakers of the device. It will be possible to use its HomePod as a wirelessly connected iPhone. Once connected to the iPhone, the HomePod will be able to answer calls, dial numbers, make emergency calls and listen to users' voicemail.
It is not known yet if the system will allow calls to be made. FaceTime audio, or whether it will allow calls to go through a Wi-Fi network rather than through the cellular network. The call feature is similar to those already available in major competitors: the Echo range with Amazon's Alexa app is already able to make wireless calls, while Google Home can call without the need for a smartphone for connection

For users who complained about the single timer, Apple plans to propose several, useful for cooking. These new features are, however, still in the beta phase, so nothing ensures that Apple keeps them for the final version.
