The security perimeter was lifted at about 11.20 am
The agitation and worry hovered on Tuesday morning in the city center of Mons. Part of the pedestrian (the top of the Grand'Rue) was evacuated around 10 am following a gas leak warning. All stores were closed and staff were requested to go out. A security perimeter was then erected by the police during the firefighters' intervention.
Fortunately, more fear than harm. "We were originally called for a gas leak," tells the NCO on the spot. "When we arrived, we noticed a pungent smell in the building that houses the New Yorker, Kruidvat and Cache-Cache stores, so we took measurements and detected a small amount of sulfur."
Two of the three stores affected by the suspicious smell were able to reopen once firefighters' measurements indicated a sufficiently low threshold for sulfur. Customers and employees of the Kruidvat store have had to wait a few more minutes before receiving the green light.
The Mons police will remain on the scene for part of the day to keep watch. The special services will try to determine the causes of this release of sulfur. One thing is certain, the pedestrian of Mons is now out of danger.
