The US government on Friday ordered non-essential personnel to leave Nicaragua because of the wave of violence that left at least 220 dead in the country. 80 days of demonstrations against President Daniel Ortega, announced the US Embbady in Managua
Washington "ordered the departure of non-essential personnel and asks US citizens to reconsider their trips to Nicaragua in light of "Crimes, civil disruption and limited availability of medical care", according to a statement posted on his official website.
"Heavily armed, plainclothes and government-controlled militia (…) operate in a large part of the country, including Managua ", warns the embbady.
The government is planning a march for Saturday. The opposition has announced a protest on Thursday 12 July and a general strike on Friday 13 to demand early elections or the departure of President Daniel Ortega, a 72-year-old former guerrilla leader since 2007 after a first term in office. 1979 to 1990.
