Two children were rescued from the sea on Monday in Koksijde, police said. The two boys aged 8 and 9 are from Lessines, Hainaut. Their condition is not critical but they were taken to the intensive care unit.

The incident occurred around 6 pm in a supervised bathing area in central Koksijde. Several children were playing on a sandbar when they were surprised by the current. Two boys did not manage to reach the beach by themselves, hence the intervention of the rescuers.

The 8-year-old boy quickly regained his senses, but the 9-year-old had to be revived. Both were taken to the hospital where they will spend the night in intensive care because they have water in their lungs. Their life is not in danger, however.
