The badociation Paola Vigano – Sweco has unveiled the sketches of the selected project
The City of Tournai, the SNCB, the SPW and the Tec have designated the project author who will draw the future district of the station and the future rue Royale. This project author is the temporary badociation Paola Vigano – Sweco
The first operator is the City of Tournai. It will take care of the revitalization of the square of the station, the square and the Crombez Park, the street Royale, the street of the Gardens and a part of the street of Becquerelle and avenues Leray, Van Cutsem and Brothers Haeghe. "The stakes were double, there is the perimeter of the station, a knot of mobility, and you have to weld the station to the Tournai hypercentre" explains Paola Vigano.
The park will be restored. The trees will be preserved and new trees will be planted. The temporary badociation Paola Vigano – Sweco wants to create, on the square of the station, the beginning of a walk from the train station to the end of the Royal street, with the cathedral in focus. The rue Royale must regain its prestige, with smart equipment and friendly spaces. Trees will also be planted along the rue Royale, giving a less mineral appearance to the street.
Concerning car traffic, it should not be altered except on the side of the station. The parking will be maintained along the rue Royale and it should also be preserved on the place Crombez, but it will leave room for activities when necessary, in case of market for example, as is the case today hui.
Concerning the part supported by the City of Tournai, "the project is subsidized at 40% by Europe, 50% by Wallonia and 10% by the City of Tournai" [19459006explainsthealdermanoftheEuropeanProjectsLaetitiaLiénard(PS) "The budget is estimated at 8 million euros for this part of the site."
Tec, SPW and SNCB are also involved in the project. Each operator will operate on its territory (below).
The motorway station, outdated, will be redesigned to accommodate its users
In addition to the city of Tournai, the SPW, SNCB and Tec are also involved in the revitalization project of the station neighborhood. Each operator will operate on its territory.
The Tec will build a new bus station and will participate in the construction of roads for buses, especially on the Boulevard des Déportés. The author of the project has devised a central island from which the buses will leave, at the same place where the highway station is today.
"This station for buses is about forty years old explains Rémy Prévot, deputy general manager of Tec Hainaut. "It has reached its limits, it is obsolete, it is not practical for people with reduced mobility, 4,000 people get on and off the bus and we are still seeing progress in terms of customers. The works have already been budgeted for 4 million euros. "
Other operator: the SPW. The Walloon Region will develop part of the Boulevard des Déportés for secure mobility between different users. According to the first sketches of the author of the project, the number of tracks would be reduced to the level of the station.
"It is necessary a connection between the city and the station .The situation is complex with a boulevard , a station … These works will also be part of the security of the boulevards of Tournai.Everything is not done in a day. These are colossal amounts " slips Yves Fobelets, director of Routes of Mons (SPW).
As for SNCB, it will improve access to the railway station and it could build, if budgets are allocated, a multi-level car park
