Véronique Sanson, her son and ex-husband at the Francos: "It's rare to be reunited"

She was one of the most glamorous couples of the 70s, French Véronique Sanson and American Stephen Stills. A marriage as much love as musical that nevertheless results in a divorce a decade later and strained relations for years, despite the birth of their son Christopher, nicknamed "Titou" by his mother, hyphen today Between the two artists.

Event rare, the three were present this Wednesday in La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime), for the opening of the Francofolies. We met them for an equally exceptional interview.

How do you get together all three on stage?

CHRISTOPHER STILLS (C.S.). The duet album of Véronique gave us the idea ( Editor's note: it will be released in September and will be titled "Duos Volatils" ). She was at the Francos, and my father was on tour, he was asked to do some songs. Miraculously, he said yes and Gérard Pont ( Editor's note: the director of Francofolies ) was very happy. It was the opportunity, not seen for a long time, to find us.

VÉRONIQUE SANSON (V.S.). The Sanson and the Stills, it's a real family, the idea has sprouted from us all with Titou and Chris! I wanted to recreate an atmosphere with lots of people, because it's so pretty.

C.S. It was a beautiful story to be together again when we all have individual projects: me, an album, my father is shooting with Judy Collins ( Editor's note: an American folk singer ) …

STEPHEN STILLS (SS) And then I even write a book in more (laughs)!

This is your first time at the Francofolies, Stephen?

S. S. Yes, it is a part of France that I did not know, I love to see the sea, it changes me about the car and the hotels

C. S. It's the artist's life, that (laughs)!

V. S. It is a very special city, the light, the architecture and the atmosphere are peculiar. Stephen does not know La Rochelle. When he sees the two towers of the city, I explain to him Richelieu, the history of France, he is overjoyed to be here

S. S. Christopher called me to say, "You have to come to France and sing a song with mom, but now we sing two and all three!

What is your relationship today?

C. S. No matter how much time has elapsed between us three in our personal lives, when we are on stage, everything stops around the music, our common pbadion. Time does not matter anymore! It gives me pleasure to show, on stage, the American side of our family.

V. S. The music is timeless, we do not care if we did not play three for 10 or 20 years, when I play with Titou, it's extraordinary, it's a gift, the same with Stephen. They are the two best musicians in the world. It does not matter what happens behind the scenes.

S. S. For me, it's also a gift: to come back to France and play with incredible musicians, even if I'm not able to hear them well (they are laughing all three of them, Stephen referring to his problems with 'hearing). It's a special concept!

Why did you choose artists to accompany you on stage?

V. S. They all have their personalities. Jeanne Cherhal has its fragile strength, but do not bother him, Alain (Souchon), it's an old friend, and then Vianney is extraordinary! He did Bercy alone with his guitar and he really impressed me. I get goosebumps when I join him on stage. He is so generous and natural, it is a wonder of nature. I have a lot of admiration and tenderness for him!

Véronique, you are in France and Stephen in the United States. How do you keep in touch?

V. S. Our complicity is above all musical because he lives in Los Angeles, 12 000 km away from home and we do not see each other often. He works a lot and I work a lot … And because he has a hearing problem, we can not talk on the phone. But we never lost contact. Christopher is also the link. Even if I do not see them often, because he is also in the United States. But he still makes a few trips and gives me news of his father. It's rare to be reunited
