Wallonia finally adopts its Animal Welfare Code

We were talking about it in April. It's official ! In Wallonia, it will now be necessary to obtain a permit to hold a pet. The Walloon Government has finally adopted last Thursday, its Code of animal welfare.

The Walloon Code of Animal Welfare, defended by the regional Minister Carlo Di Antonio (cdH), now takes into account the needs physiological and ethological aspects of animals (farm, company and exotic), and reaffirms their role in our society and our environment

It comprises 12 chapters and 109 articles, relating in particular to trade in animals, prohibited practices on animals, the transport of animals, testing and killing of animals, but also the keeping of animals.

According to Article 1, the animal is a sensitive being. For this reason, it will now be necessary to obtain a permit in order to adopt a pet. Abandonment, neglect and abuse are prohibited, as is obstruction of their freedom of movement.

The identification and registration of dogs and cats is also mandatory and paid ; this contribution will make it possible to finance a Protection Fund against abandonment and mistreatment donated to Walloon wildlife refuges.

Fighting, animal shooting exercises and race hippodromes are also banned.
