Improve air quality in large urban areas. This is the objective of a plan unveiled Friday morning by Nicolas Hulot, Minister of the Ecological Transition, and Elisabeth Borne, his counterpart in charge of transport

The State services have identified fourteen territories particularly affected by the problems

In these sectors, communities will have to create "low emission zones". Most major urban areas are concerned.

This is the case in the region, Marseille and Nice but also Toulon crossed by a highway through.

"Facing pollution we want to change the paradigm and demonstrate that the car can be replaced by soft mobility such as cycling, carpooling and of course public transport ", said Nicolas Hulot who recalled that pollution is responsible for 48,000 premature deaths a year.

What it can change

Concretely, the establishment of an EPZ will force the community to restrict the circulation of polluting vehicles (old diesel, heavy trucks , utilities).

Each city or inter-municipality should nevertheless be able to decide on the perimeter of the zone (city center or agglomeration), the time slots of the categories of vehicles concerned (all or only heavy goods vehicles) and progressivity, according to the information unveiled on Friday

In Paris or Grenoble, which are already "ZFE", a vignette system has been set up. Called Crit'Air, this device clbadifies vehicles from 1 to 5, according to their engine (gasoline or diesel) and their year of entry into circulation.

Depending on the clbadification obtained, vehicles will have the right or not to circulate during peaks of pollution
