In the months leading up to last spring’s NFL Draft, aside from the Los Angeles Chargers who ultimately drafted Justin Herbert, the team that received the most buzz for the Oregon quarterback was the New England. Patriots. While their lower position in the draft put them with an outside shot to get Herbert into the draft, Patriots media and NFL media approached the Herbert couple in New England ahead of the draft.

With the Patriots set to face the Los Angeles Chargers and Justin Herbert next week, New England coach Bill Belichick reveals the Patriots have been watching Herbert. With what Herbert did through 10 games in his rookie season and in his college film, Belichick was able to deliver a scout report that was very complimentary.

“Yeah, we evaluated it,” Belichick told New England media on a conference call Tuesday morning. “I think she has all the tools. I think you saw this in Oregon. Even in the game of bowling, he did just about everything he could and did it well.”

Belichick noted that Herbert brings a lot of tools with his physicality but also his mental abilities.

“He is impressive. Very talented player; Tall, sees it well, has a good arm, can definitely do all the throws, he’s athletic, can slip out of the pocket, smart, ”said the coach.

As Herbert continues to move towards the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, Belichick noted that he has seen a player who continues to improve and who would have a long NFL career.

“They do a number of things at the line of scrimmage. You’ve seen him check plays, audible against pressure, change plays against ‘check with me’ type situations. So it looks like he’s going to be. a good quarterback for a long time., a lot of work with, and I know he’s a smart, hard-working kid who loves football. And I’m sure he will continue to improve as he did this year throughout the season. He improved early on in games that I watched and like I said there are a lot of good players to work with. Good tight end, good full backs, good receivers He’s a good player.

At the NFL Combine, Herbert told NBC Sports Peter King that he had met the Patriots and that the opportunity to replace Tom Brady would be special. Herbert also added that he has watched the Patriots offense for a long time.

“He’s a guy I’ve always looked at, always admired. I love their attack,” Herbert said in February 2020.

The Chargers will be looking to secure their fourth win of the season against a Patriots team that is close to making the playoffs. Los Angeles is currently a 1 point favorite in Sunday afternoon’s game.
