There will be no Triple Crown winner this year, but that does not mean that the 2019 Belmont Stakes will not be a thrilling conclusion for this year's trio of great thoroughbred races, especially with an open field 10 horses go on Long Island.
Just after a win at Preakness Stakes, War of Will is the only competitor of the 10 Belmont horses that ran the first two Triple Crown events this year. He will still be guided through the 1.5-mile track – longer than Belmont Stakes jockey Tyler Gaffalione for the first time, at Churchill Downs and Pimlico Race Course. His trainer, Mark Casse, also has Sir Winston in the mix – an attempt to throw a key in Todd Pletcher's historic summary of Belmont, who has won three of those races before and has two horses of his own together to run this time -this .
Not to be overlooked, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will also compete. He will compete in Bourbon War, eighth in the standings, Bourbon War a year after becoming the oldest jockey in the history of the race to win an American Triple Crown through his work with Justify. The two biggest names in the Kentucky Derby – Maximum Security, who finished the race first but were disqualified after a call for controversial and unprecedented interference, and Country House, who finished the race in second place and has been declared the winner.
