“This would have been our first kiss on screen”: Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reveal they were meant to share a kiss in The Last Duel before the scene was cut

Ben Affleck has revealed that his kissing scene with co-star and longtime friend Matt Damon was cut from their movie The Last Duel.

The actors co-wrote the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener and originally wrote a scene where Matt’s character kissed Ben’s.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the movie stars shared how Matt was supposed to kiss Ben before the scene changed to kneel in front of him instead.

Matt joked, “I actually have to kneel down in front of him. Once he started directing, that’s how I should enter his place.

Matt plays the French knight Jean de Carrouges, whose wife Marguerite de Carrouges (Jodie Comer) accuses her squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of having raped her.

Ben plays Count Pierre d’Alençon, who will first weigh in on the issue, but Matt’s character brings his dispute to the king, fearing that d’Alençon will favor the squire.

Discussing the scene, Ben explained, “In the original version of that scene, the way this ceremony went was you kiss everyone on the mouth. And we had it in the script.

Matt said, “It would have been our first kiss on screen,” to which Ben joked, “It’s gonna have to wait.”

The cast revealed that director Ridley Scott decided to cut the scene because he thought it would be “too distracting.”

Matt added that he and Ben’s characters hate each other in the film.

The last duel was a labor of love for Ben and Matt, as they got together for the first time in over two decades to write the screenplay.

They last wrote together for their Oscar-winning screenplay for Good Will Hunting, both acting in the film.

Both men wrote from Le Gris and Carrouges’ point of view, while Holofcener wrote the scenes which took from Marguerite’s point of view, exaggerating the shifting and unknowable nature of objective truth.

The Last Duel premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September and will be released in the UK and US on October 15.
