Ben and Jerrys urge Congress to overturn previous marijuana convictions

The famous Vermont ice cream company, Ben & Jerry's, has launched a petition calling on Congress to overturn previous convictions for marijuana and to forgive anyone whose only crime was possession of the drug, according to their website.

They issued a statement Saturday on the petition entitled "This 4/20, let's be blunt about justice".

"Between 2001 and 2010, there were more than 8 million arrests of cannabis jars (88% for possession) .And during this period, a black was 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for possession of marijuana that a white man, "said the company in a statement. Ben & Jerry's mentions that cities like Baltimore have long been pursuing cases of marijuana possession and, in some cases, wiping out old warrants and convictions, they want it to be a national policy.

"We are asking Congress to rescind the previous convictions for marijuana and to grant a pardon / amnesty to anyone whose only crime was the possession of cannabis," the company exclaimed. "Cities like San Francisco and Seattle are already doing it, it's time to take this national."

Last year, Ben & Jerry's was hoping to reclaim Congress by creating flavors inspired by Democrats. They also denounced the Trump administration with a flavor "Pecan Resist".

The petition currently has nearly 30,000 signatures.
