The Bengals managed to secure their second victory of the season. It came against the Titans who had just lost their first game last week to the Steelers.
It was a very important game in terms of appearances after the coaching staff were dragged through the mud during the Carlos Dunlap saga which included the veteran’s passage criticizing them at every turn. The coaching staff and staff showed up in style to enter their week off with some serious momentum.
Winners
Quinton Spain: It’s safe to say Spain won’t have to be called out of the practice squad much longer. After entering the building on Friday, Spain were elevated to the active roster with a string of injuries along the offensive line this week. Late inactive Michael Jordan gave Spain the chance to play most of the game on left guard. He played formidable despite the short preparation time, and it’s easy to say that Spain deserves a starting role besides being called to the active roster.
Auden Tate: Tate’s 2020 season started off a little rough. He was in good health early in the season, and even when he was active he appeared to be the team’s fifth wide receiver. He exploded against the Titans making several disputed catches and playing after the catch. He was also constantly looking for the first tries. He and Joe Burrow had a great connection, and he may have earned that team’s fourth wide receiving spot. He even managed a huge grip in the third and eighth to give the Bengals a first down on the two-minute warning to help put the game on ice.
Jessie Bates III: Bates is going to make a ton of money this offseason. He recorded his second interception of this season by picking Ryan Tannehill in the end zone to start the game. He proves that he is possibly one of the biggest names moving towards free will, and the Bengals would be well advised to pay whatever he needs to stay in town.
Zac Taylor and Lou Anarumo: It’s been two long weeks for the head coach and his defensive coordinator. The Carlos Dunlap saga has created a ton of criticism against the coaching staff. A lot of players have argued that these coaches haven’t lost the locker room, and coming out after all this drama off the pitch and winning against a team like the Titans was a great way to show that this young team is still developing. This is the type of victory and performance that teams can build to move forward.
Holding an offense like Tennessee at 20 points is a great job, and Taylor did a hell of a job calling up an offensive game plan that didn’t get his rookie quarterback gaining a foothold at any point.
Jim Turner and the offensive line: You could argue that having so many backup offensive linemen are playing so well shows that Turner has committed too long to some struggling players, but since they won this week I will give Turner and those substitutes nodding their heads this week. Jonah Williams, Jordan, Trey Hopkins and Bobby Hart were all released this week. You wouldn’t have noticed if no one had told you that Burrow had enough protection to tear through the Titans’ defense. We thank Hakeem Adeniji, Fred Johnson and Billy Price for doing their job. It will be an interesting week off to see who starts the next game.
Losers
Mike thomas: Thomas was a big name during training camp with several wide receivers, and it seemed like he and Burrow had developed a little bond. Not to mention, he and Taylor have a connection dating back to when they both spent time with the Rams. Tate’s big game leaves Thomas as an odd man behind guys like AJ Green, Tyler Boyd, and Tee Higgins. We might see him again, but Tate has gained a bigger role, which means less for a guy like Thomas.
Alex Redmond, Bobby hart and Michael Jordan: This performance from that offensive line puts some jobs on the line. Redmond was there today, but Spain had to earn a starting job after that performance. This means either Jordan or Redmond would have to be moved to the bench to make way for Spain.
It’s possible that BJ Finney will also come for one of these spots after the team adds him through Dunlap Trade. Johnson and Adeniji also had strong performances, meaning Hart will have to play as well as he did against the Browns to keep his job, but if either of these guys keep playing while Hart is out , the coaching staff could stay with the hot. hand. At the very least, all of these players’ starting leashes have gotten much shorter.
