Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders admitted on Sunday that he was having fun with the countless memes of him wearing simple, hand-knitted mittens at the inauguration.
“Not only are we having fun, but what we’re doing here in Vermont is we’re going to be selling sweatshirts and t-shirts all over the country,” Sanders told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union”.
“And with all the money we’re going to raise, which I expected to reach a few million dollars, will go to programs like Meals on Wheels and Feed. [for] low-income seniors.
Sander’s country store previously launched a black crew neck with the viral snapshot – which promised to donate 100% of proceeds to Meals on Wheels in Sanders’ home state.
The campaign site said the sweatshirt was already sold out “due to overwhelming demand for this item.”
“It turns out to be a good thing and not just a fun thing,” Sanders said of becoming an Internet sensation.
