MUSCATINE, IOWA – Sin. Bernie Sanders was opposed to limiting the term of office of members of Congress and reiterated his support for public funding of the elections as a mechanism to challenge the incumbents.
His remarks come after a question from the public asking if the Vermont senator would sponsor a bill requiring legislators to withdraw after a number of election cycles.
"No, because term limits are fundamentally undemocratic, you currently have term limits, that is, you exclude people you do not like." What's going on? it if you have someone you like? " Sanders said. "I think the term limits are undemocratic because people will not be able to vote for those whom they like."
Instead, Sanders, 77, said to reverse Citizens United and signing a bill authorizing public funding for congressional elections would allow an average citizen to stand for election without being indebted to special interests.
Sanders, who unsuccessfully ran for president of the Democratic Party in 2016 against Hillary Clinton, had already suggested that he support a modified effort to create term limits for Supreme Court justices.
"What can make sense is, if not the length of the term, that judges also sit on the court of appeal," said Sanders at the April 1 We the People Summit. "Let them go out of the Supreme Court and bring new blood."
Sanders has been in Congress since 1990, where he was first representative of the Vermont District II. He was elected to the Senate as an independent in 2006 and is serving his third term.
Sanders has long been skeptical of the term of office. In 1995, he spoke in the House against a proposal that would require legislators to retire after six years.
"The problem with American politics is not that we can not chase all members of Congress after six years," Sanders said.
Sanders has been sitting in Congress since the early 90s.
