The 73rd Emmy Awards are over. The Biggest Night on TV didn’t offer many surprises, with Cedric the Entertainer playing it in the safest way possible, but the show still had enough strengths and weaknesses to last us (at least) a long time. other year. No surprise, the biggest winners of the night in the marquee categories announced tonight were “The Crown” (eight wins), “Ted Lasso” (four wins), “Mare of Easttown” (three wins), “Hacks “(three wins),” Last week tonight with John Oliver “(two wins) and” Queen’s Gambit “(two wins). But without further ado, before the classical music cuts us off, here are our favorite and least favorite moments of the night.
A good start
You have to give it to the Emmys to get out of the gate loudly. When it comes to parody numbers to sing along to, you couldn’t pick a better choice than “Just a Friend,” even before Biz Markie’s untimely death. The explosive intro number was perhaps the funniest part of the show, and at the very least, the Emmys gave us the rap of Rita Wilson.
Seth Rogen gets real on COVID security
Seth Rogen didn’t mince words on the Emmys stage on Sunday night when he commented on the rally, of at least 800 people, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“I went from wiping my groceries to Paul Bettany to sneezing in his face,” the actor said with a laugh.
Television Academy president banged by Conan O’Brien
During what was to be a serious speech on the diversity and mission of the Television Academy by the organization’s president Frank Scherma, recently retired talk show host Conan O’Brien n ‘ couldn’t help but make the audience laugh.
It all started with O’Brien screaming at the top of his lungs as Scherma took the stage. His enthusiasm eventually elicited a standing ovation for Scherma, whose speech was interrupted throughout by O’Brien’s silly antics.
Surprise wins for ‘Hacks’
It may be difficult for a new show to break through the noise of established titles, especially those with a marketing budget as large as “Ted Lasso,” but HBO’s “Hacks” was the little Emmys engine that could. Winner of Best Director, Writer, and Lead Actress, HBO’s Cutest Comedy guaranteed it would get a lot more buzz next season. And Hannah Einbinder saying “I love you” to Jean Smart during her speech was perhaps the most emotional moment of the night.
“Queen’s Gambit” director wins and keeps talking
Scott Frank won an Emmy for Best Director for “The Queen’s Gambit” and while giving his acceptance speech he kept talking even though the music – at least twice – tried to get him to quit. the scene.
“I wish I could stand up here and mention each of you. But I would need a lot more time and that’s why God created IMDb,” Frank said, before continuing for several minutes.
The horrible sketch of the fly
Remember when that fly landed on Mike Pence’s head during the Vice Presidential Debate about 30 years ago? Aside from a brief California recall joke, it’s the most political the Emmys have dared to do in a skit where Cedric the Entertainer radioed instructions on the fly. The sketch ends with the fly awkwardly dropping the ‘all flies count’ line, which could have been the most worthy moment of the night.
No moments worthy of a tweet
Over the past few years, awards shows have served as fabulous fodder for quick-fingered Twitter users, with users obsessed with Jason Sudeikis’ hoodie or Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar win for “Parasite.” This year, Twitter was like a graveyard, mostly populated by people gushing or scratching their heads about “Ted Lasso.” This side talk is one of the funniest parts of an awards show, and the Emmy Awards gave social media next to nothing for the meme.
More than three hours? Is it necessary?
Despite only one musical performance and only a few comedy skits, the Emmys felt bloated and way too long lasting over three hours. It dragged on, but also felt rushed, with far too many categories and overly active orchestral synthesis music interrupting the majority of winners. Let’s aim for two hours next year?
