Right on the Epic Games Store homepage, scroll down to the highlighted free games and proceed to checkout as usual. There are updates to this list once a week, and sometimes more for events. Register every now and then for other free goodies.
Obduction – Free until July 22
From the creators of Myst, Obduction is a sci-fi adventure through an alien world. An eerie atmosphere envelops you as you solve puzzles and explore to find a way home.
Offworld Trading Company – Free until July 22
In this real-time strategy game, you build a business to collect and sell the resources of the harsh Martian landscape. It offers daily challenges, a multiplayer mode, and a campaign mode that would offer a lot of replayability if that’s the type of game you’re interested in.
Defense Grid: Awakening – July 22 to 29
Defense Grid is a tower defense game where players are tasked with defending a base against cool looking aliens with laser guns. Sometimes the simplest premises can be so sweet!
Verdun – July 22 to 29
Verdun is the story enthusiast’s idea of a Great War game, aiming for a realistic experience against the new standard of fast-paced action. It seems to have created some cult following among enthusiasts online.
Free games on GOG
GOG’s website has a nice static selection of freebies here. Other than that, they run promotions like the one below every now and then.
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition – Free with a GOG Galaxy download
It’s unlikely, if you’re reading this list, that you haven’t heard of The Witcher 3, a critically acclaimed open-world RPG from 2015. Well, this offer is for a retouched version of the original. The Witcher, the game that kicked off the whole series.
Download the GOG Galaxy desktop client and sign in, or create an account if you don’t have one. The first thing you see after this should be the main page, where you can grab The Witcher.
Steam
For these games, you won’t want to search the Steam store. Don’t worry, we’ll show you the right stones to turn. There are also plenty of games on Steam that are always free to play, but we’re here to hunt the dragon for the limited time offers.
Endless space collection
Endless Space is a sci-fi strategy game where you will control spaceships as they fight for the secrets and resources of an ancient civilization called The Endless. This game is available through a promotion that involves linking your Steam account to another platform.
Head over to the Games2Gether page and go through the quick registration process. Once the link is complete, you will be prompted to log into your Steam account. Then check your rewards (the current icon, top right of the G2G page) and there will be a code for Endless Space and its DLC.
Nights Into Dreams – Free until all limited codes are claimed
In this 2012 remake of a 1996 title for the Sega Saturn, you’ll fly through a colorful and fantasy world as you explore, collect, and battle.
You will not claim this offer through the Steam store. Instead, head over to the Sega 60th Anniversary website and register your email address. You should then be prompted to select a platform, where you will select the Steam icon and log in to link your Steam account. Then check your email momentarily for the code to use and add the game to your account.
Amazon Prime Gaming
You may not know it, but the Prime Gaming membership is included with an annual membership for Amazon Prime. On the Prime Gaming homepage, there is a rotating selection of titles to claim. For most games, it’s as easy as hitting the “claim” button. Then you can launch it as you like from the Amazon games app. So while these aren’t technically free, many people have paid for these games before and don’t even know it yet.
All of these offers will be released on August 2.
Batman – The Enemy Within
More Batman from the folks behind Batman: The Telltale Series. You won’t hit the baddies while “Whop!” “And” Ugh! Fly off the screen – instead, you’ll be doing the Capped Crusader’s detective work, trying to stop the Riddler from putting more citizens of Gotham into Saw-type contraptions.
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
In a remake of a ’90s classic of the same name, The Secret of Monkey Island is a point-and-click adventure, filled with wacky and charming characters. It is highly rated and is definitely worth the download.
