Best of Netflix’s Charming Vacation Romantic Comedies

[ad_1]

The streaming service even kicked off this year’s holiday lineup. before Halloween.

With an expectation bar well below “Love Actually,” and using the benchmarks of predictably calming storylines and pleasantly sweet romances, here are my picks for the best new romcoms. (For the purposes of this list, I’ve excluded Netflix’s large selection of vacation movies featuring princes, so-called princesses, and fake farms.)

Emma Roberts plays a single woman in Chicago who works hard but can’t find the right guy. To make matters worse, it’s his mother who meddles, played by the great Francis Fisher. When Roberts meets Jackson, played by Luke Bracey, at the mall (where he’s usually found), the two meet cute, and then he swipes her a card. They decide to become “Holidate” each other, and only start dating while on vacation, you guessed it. Guess what happens next? Add Kristin Chenoweth as a bizarre aunt and a dance streak and you have a holiday hit.

“Operation Christmas Drop”

Tropical, patriotic, and loosely based on the actual US Air Force mission the film is named for, Kat Graham plays Erica, a legislative assistant sent to the US military base in Guam tasked with finding a reason for the to close. But the Air Force Captain there, Andrew, played by Alexander Ludwig, has different plans. (The two end up together, obviously.)

“Dash and Lily”

This one is “Serendipity” meets “To all the boys I’ve loved before”.

Based on the young adult book series, “Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares”, it’s Christmas in New York. Travel the city from your couch – and remember what it was like to see people out and about – as Dash, who hates Christmas, and Lily, who loves him, exchange secrets and feelings in a notebook red that they hide in different places around the city. What will happen when the two meet in real life after revealing so much about themselves?

Austin Abrams plays Dash and Midori Francis plays Lily in the eight-episode series.

“Midnight at Magnolia”

Maggie Quinn (Natalie Hall) and Jack Russo (Evan Williams) are childhood friends who grew up to co-host their own Chicago-based morning radio show, “The Windy City Wake Up”.

But the two are looking to strike it big, with a satellite radio show. In order to gain more listeners, they tell fans that they are truly in love and that they will share a midnight kiss on New Years Eve. What starts as a lie ends with an engagement, of course. Come for the festive decor, stay for the story of friends who fall in love.

“A Christmas wedding in New York”

What would a vacation movie list be without a Guardian Angel movie? Nia Fairweather plays Jenny, a future bride who hates Christmas because it reminds her of the deaths of her father, mother and best friend. When her guardian angel Azrael shows up with an offer to revisit her life, Jenny is offered a choice.

In her alternate life, her father is alive and Jenny is in love and engaged to her deceased best friend Gabby.

It’s a bit more complicated than some canned Christmas content, but still won’t require too much space for the overcrowded head.

Best wishes for your streaming season!
