Beto O 'Rourke hires Jeff Berman, head of the Obama delegation

Beto O'Rourke recruited Jeff Berman, Barack Obama's delegate selection director and delegate strategist for Hillary Clinton in 2016, as senior adviser to the delegates' strategy, the campaign announced Thursday.

The hiring comes at a time when O'Rourke, after a very unstructured campaign in the US Senate last year, has decided to reconstitute a more traditional operation for his tenure as president. Berman played a pivotal role in the Obama campaign in 2008, guiding his efforts in the complex landscape of Democratic primary delegates.

Jen O'Malley Dillon, campaign manager at O'Rourke, said in a statement that Berman was "one of the first people I contacted when I joined the group because the delegates' strategy is so essential to our overall strategy. "

O'Rourke's campaign in El Paso, Texas, has been marked by operational uncertainty since March, when O'Rourke entered the race before installing O'Malley Dillon. Becky Bond and Zack Malitz, the strategists who worked for the O'Rourke Senate campaign, left suddenly earlier this year, as BuzzFeed reported for the first time.

In addition to recruiting Berman and O'Malley Dillon, O'Rourke has hired key personnel from key nominating states, including Norm Sterzenbach, Iowa. Rob Flaherty, former creative director of the super progressive PAC Priorities USA and assistant director of digital communications for Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, also joins O'Rourke.

According to the latest Morning Consult survey, Mr. O. Rourke now has a polling rate of about 5% nationwide, after a wave of enthusiasm surrounding the announcement of his campaign in March.
