Beyoncé and Jay-Z paid tribute to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, by swapping her for one of the most recognizable figures in the history of art – the Mona Lisa.

While the Carters were not present at Wednesday's Brit Awards, the British equivalent of the Grammys, they accepted the prize for best international group by video message. In a scene reminiscent of their music video "Apes ** t", in which they make themselves a famous pose in front of "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci in the Louvre, the two men stand on each side of the house. But the famous painting has been replaced by an image of Meghan or, as Beyoncé later said, a "melancholy Mona".

This tribute comes as the Duchess faces increasing scrutiny from the British press and public. In recent months, she has been the subject of racist commentary and numerous tabloid speculation about her relationship with Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. The British royal family has since asked social media companies to fight online abuses against the two duchesses.

The image of Meghan is that of American artist Tim O. Brien, who had created the work in 2018 for Meghan's sorority alumni magazine, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Illustrator for publications like Time and Rolling Stone, O. Brien has already produced magazine covers illustrating personalities such as Barack Obama, Saddam Hussein and David Bowie. His portraits also appeared on American stamps.

The illustrator told CNN that he was surprised to see his work in the video of acceptance.

"I totally agree," he said in a telephone interview. "I love Beyoncé, like most people, and Jay-Z too.

"The world is changing, the face of beauty is changing for the better."

Shortly after the announcement of the video, Beyoncé posted a picture of herself posing with the portrait on Instagram. In the legend, she explained the choice to replace Mona Lisa by Meghan.

"In the honor of Black History Month, we bow to one of our melanas Monas," she writes. "Congratulations on your pregnancy! We wish you a lot of joy."
