As rioters stormed Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, protesters in support of President Donald Trump – most of them unmasked – gathered in cities across the United States.
California
Pro-Trump and anti-Trump protesters gathered at Los Angeles City Hall around 1 p.m. PT, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
When some pro-Trump protesters attempted to “take” an intersection, they were greeted by anti-Trump protesters, resulting in a physical confrontation, police said.
“The LAPD metropolitan division was at the scene but did not engage in any management or crowd control,” police said.
An illegal gathering was declared and six people arrested: three for carrying unauthorized items while attending a public demonstration, two for not dispersing and one for resisting / embarrassing an officer.
Washington state
Shortly before 3 p.m. PT, protesters gained access to the grounds of the Washington State Governor’s Mansion in Olympia, Wash., Washington State Patrol spokesman Darren Wright said.
The state patrol responded to the first call of a breach and officers dispersed the crowd, Wright said.
“They did not make access to the entrance itself, just to the grounds,” Wright said, adding that the protest was peaceful.
No arrests were made, he said.
The state patrol is investigating how the violation happened, he said.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a video message that he was safe.
Oregon
Quarrels have erupted at the Oregon Capitol in Salem “despite repeated attempts to prevent opposing groups from converging on violence,” Salem police said.
The altercations “ended quickly when the police arrived,” police said.
“No force was needed to separate the two groups,” police added.
Oregon State Police, who declared the event an illegal gathering, said one person was arrested for harassment and disorderly conduct.
Utah
About 400 Trump supporters gathered at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that one of its photographers was pepper sprayed and verbally harassed while covering the protest.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox tweeted in response, “It’s disgusting. We will work with Capitol Hill security to ensure perpetrators are held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Michigan
About 700 to 800 people came to the Michigan Capitol lawn in Lansing, some bringing guns and “Stop the steal” signs, the Detroit Free Press reported.
A woman was holding a sign saying “ELECTION # ‘S AS PHONY AS COVID #’ S”.
No one tried to get inside the building, the Free Press said, and state police called the crowd “cooperative.”
Georgia
About 100 protesters, some armed with long guns, came to the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta, the Associated Press reported.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his staff evacuated their offices as protesters gathered outside.
Colorado
Hundreds of Trump supporters united outside the Colorado Capitol in Denver for a peaceful rally, the Denver Post reported.
Some wore helmets, knee pads and gloves with hardened knuckles, while others carried signs that “the media is the virus,” the Post reported.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said he ordered municipal buildings in the city to close early “out of caution.”
Minnesota
About 500 Trump supporters, some dressed in colonial-era costumes, gathered at the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul, The Star Tribune reported.
Some protesters laughed when they learned that crowds were besieging the U.S. Capitol in Washington, the newspaper said.
“We’re going to fight, we’re going to come down, there are going to be casualties,” local Republican Party leader Alley Waterbury said, according to the Tribune. “I’ll be the first victim, I don’t care.”
“We are in 1776… the time for discussions is over,” one man told the Tribune. “Be on the right side of history because we are on the verge of success.”
Minnesota state soldiers guarded the entrance to the Capitol. A few protesters went from the Capitol to the governor’s house, which was guarded by state soldiers, the newspaper said.
Arizona
About 1,000 Trump supporters converged at the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix for a 10-hour protest, the Arizona Republic reported.
A few Trump supporters knocked on the doors of the State Capitol building, shouting “Freedom!” and shout for the governor, the newspaper reported.
Some protesters brought a wooden guillotine with a Trump flag on it, the Republic reported.
