Beyond Light ‘on PS4 right now, ahead of launch

Destiny 2’s next update for Beyond Light is wild. It’s not just about adding an expansion to the game, but removing five massive areas and tweaking a ton of stuff in the backend to reduce the overall size of the game before the next gen launches.

If you read TWAB carefully, you’ll know that on at least one platform you can get a head start on downloading over 60GB of the full game reinstallation needed to launch Beyond Light. You won’t have to wait until the night before and pray that nothing goes wrong while you sleep.

On PS4 at least.

Late last night, Bungie let PS Plus users start downloading the game’s full update two days before launch. I checked this morning and yes I am able to download the update, which for me saves 59GB download for a final 70GB final file size, much smaller compared to the over 100GB that ‘she was before.

Bungie says you can only install this if Automatic Updates are turned on, as they try to reduce the server load by allowing PS Plus users to go earlier. I have this, but I was also able to trigger it after booting by hovering over the game and doing “Check for Updates” which is how you usually download patches manually if automatic updates don’t do not start. Then you can try that. If you don’t have it at all, it’s assumed that another Access Bundle will release tonight at 11 p.m. ET.

I believe what happens is that it adds the new version of the game without completely removing the old version of the game which is why the total space needed for installation is 170gb on PS4. As after this patch, you can still go to all the vaulted destinations, which are still in the game. But on Tuesday those will be removed and they will no longer be. (Update: While you can download the patch now, it looks like it won’t install until 11 p.m. ET tomorrow night)

So what if you are not PS4?

Xbox gamers can download the update Monday night after the servers go offline at around 10 p.m. ET. However, if you get an X Series and it doesn’t arrive until the next day … it won’t be much use.

PC gamers will find the update to be a normally queued Steam update after servers shutdown at 10 p.m. ET.

PS4 players are recalled do not to remove the game, even if it is technically in the process of being downloaded and replaced, as that will mess up that process.

And I’ll remind everyone that we’re still planning some sort of live event tomorrow night, maybe starting at 7 p.m. ET, after players are forced to download a small update, maybe that late. until 10 p.m. ET when the servers go down. I don’t know if it’s three hours or thirty seconds, but it’s in the tower, so be prepared to hang around there for a while.

I’ll be logging in after this update to see if anything is different, but I don’t imagine it will and it’s just a preload for what’s to come. Download the update for yourself to get a head start, otherwise you’ll have to wait until tomorrow night for other platforms. Beyond Light will officially launch at 12 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 10.
